During the interwar years marked by the Great Depression, intense competition for Army acquisition funding ensued. The rivalry between the proponents of Fighter Supremacy and Strategic Bombing played out at the Air Corps Tactical School (ACTS), the General Headquarters (GHQ), in Congress, and in the media. Military exercises pitted the Navy and the Air Corps against each other, with covert maneuvers and gambits as each side sought to gain the upper hand.
Eventually, leaders such as Benjamin Foulois, Billy Mitchell, and Frank Andrews were able to initiate a bomber competition to replace the Martin B-10. The Boeing Model 299, a four-engined aircraft, emerged as the clear winner. However, the plane crashed during a demonstration at Dayton, and the Army opted for the Douglas B-18 instead.
Undeterred, Frank Andrews managed to have 13 Y1B-17 aircraft produced and sent to the 2nd Bombardment Group at Langley Field, Virginia. There, Robert Olds and his three squadrons captivated the nation with their exploits, including long-range goodwill flights, transcontinental speed runs with the navigation expertise of the obscure 1st Lt. Curtis LeMay, and the thrilling movie "Test Pilot" starring Clark Gable, Myrna Loy, and Spencer Tracy.
Fortunately, the daring young men of the Army Air Corps, who put their careers on the line, played a crucial role in the development of the B-17 bomber, which became one of the iconic weapons of World War II. This is the untold story of the aircraft's development and the individuals who made it happen.
